Red Headscarves’ Vow to the Nation

In the 8th year of the Republic of China, Wang Yu, a peasant woman from Chaoshan, had just given birth to her baby daughter when her husband Zhang Kaijun, together with her mother-in-law, tricked and sold her. Alone, she boarded a red-headed ship bound for Nanyang. During the voyage, she met two other wretched women, Axiang and Jiaojiao. Axiang died protecting Wang Yu. Before her death, she handed over her red scarf and entrusted Wang Yu with her wish to find her daughter. Wang Yu swore to survive and fulfill her friend’s last wish. Upon arriving in Singapore, Wang Yu was bought by foreman Wang Wenjie. She endured backbreaking labor at the construction site, hoping day and night to save enough money to return home — only to receive the devastating news that her biological daughter had passed away and Zhang Kaijun had remarried. Overwhelmed by despair, she was inspired by Wang Wenjie to step out of her personal grief and protect more suffering people. Later, Wang Yu rescued the troubled Jiaojiao and adopted the orphan Xiaohua. With Wang Wenjie’s full support, she united a group of female workers and formed the "Red Headscarves" construction team. They repeatedly resisted oppression from Western colonizers and built a foothold for overseas Chinese in Nanyang. When the full-scale War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression broke out, Jiaojiao, filled with love for her motherland, resolutely returned to China and sacrificed her life at the Battle of Taierzhuang. Xiaohua and the son of Alian headed for the Yunnan-Burma Road, risking their lives to transport supplies for the war effort.
